Casted-off from their land to the sea and now they get land sick
Off the coast of Malaysia, in the
crystal coral seas, there are group of people who have being casted –off lands
and have to leave on the sea, they are banned from Malaysia soil as refugees.
The Bajau people have severed ties with the mainland
and now living a nomadic lifestyle on the open ocean. They build off-shore community and relies soley on the
ocean for their survival. The children of the Bajau children first education is
a net for catching fish, octopus and Lobsters.
The children have spent most of
their natural lives on the ocean that their eyes can now see clearly
under-water, and those of them that go on land experience “land sickness” the
moment they leave the water.
They sometimes come to land to
trade seafood for the necessities you cannot find in the ocean. The Bajau are stateless communities refugees who left Philippines
and now their whole lives is at the sea, their visit to land is to trade fish
for rice, water and other staples.
Their interaction with the sea
have made them to know time by moment of the tides .
