20 goats and three Carmel as Dowry in Kenya
This is a heartbreak, most cruel,
but it is a tradition in Kenya where girls at the very young age are sold into marriage
for a dowry in livestock as part of the traditional marriage rights.
This girls are dressed in tribal
jewellery as they are being traded away by their parents for 20 goats, three Carmel
and ten Cows, most of which are members of the Pokot tribe.
Despite the Kenyan Law that
forbids early marriage, this girls as old as fourteen of age are being taking
into marriage by force. During this ceremony of forced marriage, the girls will
be singing and stay standing from afternoon, through the night and the morning
after.
These people of Pokot are also
know to practice female genital mutilation, but these is carried out at a much
younger age than the forced marriage
